Camallera, the village

The village Camallera, which together with Saus and Llampaies forms a municipality, belongs to the region Alt Ampordà and it has 700 inhabitants.

It is located by the boarder between the regions of Baix Empordà and Gironès, in between the rivers Ter and Fluvià. Whithin the area, there are several remains of the Roman time: it is believed that the August Route, which joined Tarraco with Rome, passed through this region. Among the centres of cultural interest, the Sant Bartomeu's church (Camallera) from the XIIIth century stands out, as well as Holy Eugènia’s church (Saus); the one in Sant Martí (Llampaies); and the hermitage of Sant Sebastià, from the XVIth century.

Near a crossroads, Camallera is 16 km from the Costa Brava (l'Escala's municipality), 31 km from Girona, 27 km from Figueres and 5 km from the highway AP-7 (exit 5, l'Escala-Empúries). The rail road line Barcelona-Portbou passes through the very centre of the village as well.
